The way that “self care” has become advertised and promoted within the wellness community has a TON of privilege associated with it.⠀
This is why we really don’t use the words “self care”, we used the phrase “nervous system regulation”. Too often, self care feels unattainable by those who are struggling to you know, pay their bills or stay alive? During this pandemic. People begin to see themselves as not being able to access rest or rejuvenation because they can’t afford to travel or go to the spa or other glamorous “self care”.
Try to list 5 things that you're thankful for to keep you looking forward during this challenging time.This is “self care” because it is caring for our nervous systems. It is also important to note that what helps us regulate sometimes, may not work for us in other situations. This is why having many tools in the toolbox for our system regulation is so important.⠀

You are worth care and regulation, even if you are not showered with privilege.⠀

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs describes five essential human needs that impact our ability to live fulfilling and meaningful lives.
They are listed as
-Physiological needs(food, water, housing, sleep, clothing)
-Safety and Security (health, employment, property, family, social stability)
-Love and Belonging (friendship, intimacy, family/ chosen family, sense of connection)
-Self-Esteem (confidence, achievement, respect of others, a sense of self)
-Self-Actualization(morality, creativity, acceptance, purpose).⠀

The main concept of this theory is that if the core human needs (the bottom of the triangle) are not met, the needs above will be difficult to achieve, meet or obtain.⠀
⠀
This theory can be helpful when working with survivors who may feel stuck in their healing or when working with addictions.⠀
