Juan Ponce Enrile is dead. His passing has sparked tributes from families and allies with many remembering him as a devoted family man and a political mentor. But for the nation he helped shape, his legacy is far more complicated.
For the country, Enrile was many things. He was the Martial Law architect, a coup plotter against the very regime he built, and a power broker across multiple presidents. His career spanned various administrations because he knew how to bend with the tide not because of convictions, but political calculations.
He moved from authoritarian enforcer to People Power figure; from democracy hero to defender of the same dynasty he once abandoned. Every reinvention seemingly serving one compass: his proximity to power.
Enrile may have been gentle in his home, but his public life left deep marks on a nation still wrestling with the consequences of impunity, revisionism, and survival of the political elite. His death may close a chapter but questions on his legacy remains. In a country still reeling from injustices of the past, where loyalties change with every administration, what does real accountability look like?
