MEMORY VERSE FOR SUNDAY, JUNE 7, 2026
"I desire mercy, not sacrifice." (Matthew 9:13)

When I read Jesus' words, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” I am reminded that God is more concerned about how we treat people than simply following religious practices. Going to church, praying, and serving in ministry are important, but they lose their meaning if we do not show kindness and compassion to others.

In its original context, Jesus spoke these words to the Pharisees who criticized Him for eating with tax collectors and sinners. By quoting Hosea 6:6, Jesus reminded them that God desires a heart of compassion more than religious rituals alone. Genuine faith is shown not only through acts of worship but also through mercy toward others.

Recently, I came across the story of an old man in Cebu named Ireneo Vidal. He would play his harmonica on the streets to earn a little money for food. He was not doing it for himself, but to feed his grandchild. Yet, he was arrested and detained for a few days because the authorities believed he was violating the anti-mendicancy law. As I read his story, I felt sad. Many people only saw an old man on the street, but behind his music was a grandfather who was simply trying to survive and provide for his grandchild using his talent.

This story reminded me of the people Jesus met during His ministry. The Pharisees were quick to judge tax collectors and sinners, but Jesus looked beyond their reputation and saw their needs. He chose mercy over judgment. He saw people as children of God, rather than as problems to be avoided.

Sometimes we also find ourselves judging others too quickly. It is easy to criticize when we do not know the whole story. However, Jesus teaches us to have compassionate hearts. Mercy means trying to understand before we judge. It means helping when we can and treating others with dignity and kindness, even when they have made mistakes or are looked down upon by society.

As Christians, we are called to reflect the character of Christ. What many people need today is understanding, kindness, and hope. May God teach us to see people the way Jesus sees them. May we be known not only for our worship and service, but also for our mercy. For in the end, God desires mercy, not sacrifice.
