The recent destructive earthquake in GenSan reminded me of a fascinating map in the Jesuit "Atlas de Filipinas" (1900) that shows the distribution of earthquakes throughout the Philippines. Made from research data from Fr. Jose Algue , SJ the map shows in red where earthquakes are "most frequent", a shade lighter where these are "frequent" then "somewhat frequent" then on the opposite end, where earthquakes are "rare" and "very rare,"
More than a century later, if the tectonic plates have not moved around much, if this map is still accurate can it guide us on where it is safest to buy and build our homes?

My Inquirer column today on historical parallels cant catch up with events evolving in the Senate. The good news is that the clowns were absent today and sense has returned to the Senate. Lets pray it stays that way so that the present will stop reading like the past.
