Why Gel Extensions Lift More During Summer

Summer heat and humidity can affect nail retention more than many people realize.

1. Sweaty / Oily Nail Plate

During hot weather, the body produces more sweat and oil.
The natural nail plate can become slightly moist or oily, making it harder for gel products to properly adhere.

This can cause:

* early lifting,
* sidewall lifting,
* popping off,
* or pocket lifting.

2. Moisture Expansion of Natural Nails

Natural nails absorb moisture from:

* sweating,
* washing hands,
* swimming,
* humid air.

When nails absorb moisture, they slightly expand.
When they dry again, they shrink.

That repeated expansion/shrinking can weaken the bond between:

* natural nail,
* base gel,
* builder gel,
* or extensions.

3. Heat + Sweat After Application

If a client sweats heavily soon after a nail appointment:

* adhesion may weaken before the product fully stabilizes,
* especially if prep was not perfect.

4. More Outdoor Activities

Beach trips, pools, detergents, alcohol, and sunscreen can also affect retention.

How Heat Affects Gel Polish Chemistry

Gel polish reacts to temperature changes.

In High Heat:

* Gel becomes thinner/runny.
* Pigments may separate faster.
* Some gels self-level too quickly.
* Thick gels can become softer.

This can affect:

* application control,
* apex structure,
* curing consistency.

During Curing

Very warm gel may sometimes create:

* stronger heat spikes,
* uneven curing if applied too thick,
* faster movement before curing.

UV Exposure

Sunlight contains UV rays.
Long-term exposure may:

* slightly yellow some gels,
* fade pigments,
* reduce top coat clarity over time.

Higher quality HEMA FREE and TPO FREE systems often have better stability, but storage is still important.

Summer Nail Care Tips (Clients & Nail Techs)

For Clients

* Avoid soaking hands too long.
* Wear gloves for cleaning.
* Apply cuticle oil daily.
* Avoid using nails as tools.
* Dry feet and hands properly after sweating/swimming.

For Nail Technicians

* Prep more thoroughly during humid months.
* Use dehydrator properly.
* Ensure no invisible moisture remains.
* Work in a cool room if possible.
* Keep gels away from direct sunlight and heat.
* Close bottles immediately after use.
* Thin, even layers cure better during hot weather.

For clients with very sweaty hands:

* extra dehydration,
* acid-free primer,
* or adjusting prep technique

can significantly improve retention.
