The Eternal Perspective
Colossians 3:2 (KJV) Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
Short context:
He was writing from a Roman prison to a young church in the city of Colossae (modern-day Turkey)
The church at Colossae was under attack by false teachers. These teachers were spreading a dangerous mixture of ideas often called the "Colossian Heresy." This heresy combined three main errors:
• Legalism: Forcing Christians to follow strict Jewish dietary laws and festivals.
• Mysticism: Worshiping angels and chasing "secret knowledge" or mystical visions.
• Asceticism: Severely punishing the physical body (fasting excessively, harsh rules) to stop sinful desires.
In chapters 1 and 2, Paul fights this heresy by arguing that Jesus Christ is supreme and sufficient. You do not need secret rituals or extra rules; Christ is everything you need.
The Book of Colossians is sharply divided into two halves, and Chapter 3 is the turning point:
• Chapters 1–2 (Theology): Who Christ is and what He did on the cross.
• Chapters 3–4 (Application): How a Christian should live because of what Christ did.
Introduction
Our minds are a battlefield where daily focus dictates our peace.
In Colossians 3:2, God gives us a clear command about where to look. He wants us to change our focus from the problems on earth to the promises in heaven. If your heart is fixed on the wrong things, your life will move in the wrong direction.
What should we do to have an eternal perspective?
1. Fix Your Thoughts
• You get to choose what you think about every day. The King James Version uses the word "affection," which means your mindset, desires, and willpower. God wants you to pick heavenly thoughts over worldly worries because your thoughts drive your actions. If you fill your mind with media, gossip, and fear, your life will reflect chaos. If you fill your mind with God's truth, your life will reflect His peace.
• Supporting Verse: “Finally, brethren... if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
• Isaiah 26:3 (KJV) Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.
• Romans 8:6 (KJV) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.
2. Forget Worldly Distractions
• Earthly things like money, status, and anxiety do not last. Paul specifically warns us "not on things on the earth." Looking only at the world will make you blind to God. When we obsess over bank accounts, earthly validation, or temporary troubles, we become trapped in fear. We must intentionally ignore the loud distractions of this world so we can hear the quiet voice of the Holy Spirit.
• Supporting Verse: “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness...” (Matthew 6:33)
• 1 John 2:15 (KJV) Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
• 2 Timothy 2:4 (KJV) No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.
• Mark 8:36 (KJV) For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?
3. Focus on What Lasts
• True peace and joy come from eternal things. The problems you are facing today are temporary, but God’s promises are forever. Keeping your eyes on Jesus changes how you handle hardships. When you view your life through the lens of eternity, a bad day at work or a difficult trial loses its power over you. Your anchor is in heaven, where it cannot be shaken.
• Supporting Verse: “For the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)
• Hebrews 12:2 (KJV) Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
• Luke 12:32-33 (KJV) Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.
• Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.
ILLUSTRATION:
The Story: Imagine you pack your bags and go on a two-week vacation. You check into a standard, temporary hotel room. The wallpaper is a little ugly, the carpet is slightly worn, and the view out the window is just a parking lot. Now, imagine spending all your vacation money buying brand-new furniture for that hotel room, repainting the walls, and installing expensive light fixtures. People would think you are crazy! Why would you remodel a room you are leaving in a few days?
The Application: This earth is just a temporary hotel room. We are only passing through. Yet, so many Christians spend all their time, energy, and stress trying to perfect, remodel, and decorate their earthly lives. Don’t invest your heart into a place you are leaving soon; invest in your permanent home in heaven.
Conclusion
Your thoughts control your life, and where your heart is fixed matters most. Stop staring down at your earthly problems, earthy wants and desires and look up to your heavenly Father today.
Let us all have a heavenly perspective
