π‘ππͺπ¦: NEMSU-TC consults transition from BAT to BSA
In compliance with the new CMO released by CHED, NEMSU-TC held a consultative meeting, gathering professional agriculturists, to propose a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSA) curriculum.
Dr. Douglas M. Doloriel, Department Chair of the Department of Agriculture, led the discussion on improving course subjects on Wednesday with the aim of crafting a new curriculum to take effect in the first semester of A.Y. 2024-2025.
Course subjects such as coconut farming, Management and Extension Program, and Principles of Cooperativism were suggested by Engr. Ramon Barbosa, Municipal Agriculturist, and owner of Amparitas Integrated Farm; Marcos M. Quico, Provincial Agriculturist; and Maria Fely V. Jensen, Senior Agrarian Reform Program Technologist, respectively.
Based on CMO No. 23, s. 2021, the Bachelor of Agricultural Technology (BAT) will be abolished and reformed into BSA, making the new curriculum a hybrid of BAT.
Outlined in the order, after the first two years, students may become graduates of a Certificate in Agricultural Science and will specialize in either Crop Science or Animal Science to obtain their bachelor's degree in their 3rd and 4th years.
Consequently, practicum is essential in their 2nd year to perform skills-related activities in the course that will enable them to get National Certificates.
The new curriculum in Agriculture aims to equip students with knowledge they can apply in the field, not just as employees in agencies.
"Mas higher level sa degree," Regie Bicamon, a soil expert at the DA Regional Office, expressed her support for producing well-rounded graduates in agriculture- not only in theory but also in application and entrepreneurship.
