Fashion Revolution Day took its place of anniversary at the 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse. Rana Plaza, a building in Bangladesh, housed several garment factories, employing around 5,000 people. The people in this building were manufacturing clothing for many of the biggest global fashion brands. More than 1,100 people – mostly young women – died in the collapse and another 2,500 were injured, making it the fourth largest industrial disaster in history.

The Fashion Transparency Index is an annual review of 250 of the world's largest fashion brands and retailers ranked according to the level of public disclosure on human rights and environmental policies, practices, and impacts in their own operations and in their supply chains. The 2021 report revealed that the spotlight issues from that year were: decent work, covering COVID-19 response, living wages, purchasing practices, unionization, collective bargaining; gender and racial equality; sustainable sourcing and materials; overconsumption and business models; waste and circularity; water and chemicals; and climate change and biodiversity. The goal is to create greater transparency in the fashion supply chain and to reveal some of the deplorable conditions in which clothing is made.
