St. Raymond of Pennafort, honored as the Patron Saint of Canonists, is remembered each year on January 7. Born into a noble Spanish family, Raymond had a deep devotion to the Blessed Mother from a young age. A gifted scholar, he excelled academically and became a respected teacher. However, he chose to leave his esteemed position to join the Dominican Order, embracing a life marked by humility, penance, and kindness. St. Raymond devoted himself to helping others grow spiritually and morally, guiding many toward God.

Together with King James of Aragon and St. Peter Nolasco, Raymond founded the Order of Our Lady of Ransom, dedicated to freeing Christians held captive by the Moors. His strong commitment to living righteously led him to confront King James on the Island of Majorca, urging the king to end his immoral behavior and dismiss his mistress.

When King James failed to keep his promise, Raymond was forbidden to leave the island by royal decree. In a miraculous display of faith, he traveled back to Barcelona by riding on his cloak.

This miracle moved King James to repent and adopt St. Raymond's pious example. St. Raymond continued his important work until he passed away at the age of one hundred, leaving a lasting legacy of faith, discipline, and dedicated service to the Church.
