The JF-17 Thunder Block 3 (also known as JF-17C or Block III) is a 4.5-generation lightweight, single-engine, multirole supersonic fighter jet developed jointly by China (CAC) and Pakistan (PAC). It represents a major upgrade over previous Blocks (I/II), bringing it closer to contemporary fighters like advanced F-16 variants in capability while remaining cost-effective (roughly $25–50 million per unit depending on configuration).878f4f0b9a02
Key Features and Upgrades (Block 3)
Radar: KLJ-7A (or similar) Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar — a major leap from earlier pulse-Doppler radars. Offers better multi-target tracking, longer detection ranges, improved resistance to jamming/ECM, and support for advanced air-to-air and air-to-ground modes.4707ac41c187
Engine: More powerful Klimov RD-93MA afterburning turbofan (≈91.2 kN thrust). Improves thrust-to-weight ratio (around 0.95–1.07), climb rate, and overall performance. Some reports note vertical acceleration capability when lightly loaded.cc067d172ead
Avionics & Cockpit:
Helmet-Mounted Display/Sight (HMD) for high-off-boresight targeting.
Larger/wider-angle Head-Up Display (HUD), glass cockpit with multifunction displays (MFDs), and upgraded mission computer.
Three-axis digital fly-by-wire (FBW) flight controls (full authority, replacing hybrid systems).
Enhanced Electronic Warfare (EW) suite, Missile Approach Warning System (MAWS), Radar Warning Receiver (RWR), and possible IRST.c46afb215c1d
Weapons & Hardpoints: Up to 8 hardpoints (one additional in Block 3) with ~3,800–4,500+ kg (≈8,400–10,500 lbs) payload capacity. Supports:
Advanced BVR missiles like PL-15/PL-15E (long range, reportedly 145+ km).
WVR missiles: PL-10E (high-off-boresight), PL-5E/PL-9C.
Air-to-ground: Precision-guided munitions, laser-guided bombs, anti-ship missiles (e.g., CM-400AKG), and various rockets/pods.
Compatible with other Chinese/Turkish weapons in some export configs.598907366e96
Performance:
Max speed: Mach 1.6–1.8 (≈1,910 km/h).
Service ceiling: ≈55,500 ft (16,916 m).
Combat radius: ≈900–1,300 km (internal fuel); extendable with drop tanks/refueling.
Ferry range: Up to ≈2,000–3,500 km with tanks.
G-limits: +8 / -3.
Rate of climb: High (reported ~300 m/s in some sources).a643b49f3f73
It retains the lightweight, agile design with diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI), good maneuverability, and multirole flexibility (air superiority, ground attack, anti-ship, reconnaissance). It's in serial production for the Pakistan Air Force and has seen export interest (e.g., reports involving Azerbaijan). A two-seat variant is also associated with the program.f0d77e
