Disc Degeneration Grades Explained (MRI Based)

Grade 1 (Normal)
Healthy disc, bright white on MRI.

Grade 2
Mild dehydration, still normal height.

Grade 3
Moderate loss of water, disc height slightly
reduced.

Grade 4
Severely dark disc, noticeable height loss, signs of wear.

Grade 5
Complete disc collapse, dark disc, advanced degeneration.

Symptoms may include
Back pain
Stiffness
Radiating leg pain (sciatica)
