World Pneumonia Day is an annual event on November 12 that aims to raise awareness and educate people about pneumonia and how to combat it: 

 

What is pneumonia?

Pneumonia is a potentially life-threatening lung infection caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi that can be transmitted from person to person. It's the world's leading infectious killer of children and adults, and is responsible for the majority of deaths in children under five years old. 

 

Why is World Pneumonia Day important?

World Pneumonia Day is a reminder that pneumonia can strike at any time and anywhere, and that it's important to take action to prevent, treat, and detect it early. 

 

How can we prevent pneumonia?

Pneumonia can be prevented through:

Vaccination 

 

Adequate nutrition 

 

Addressing environmental factors like indoor air pollution and proper ventilation 

 

Avoiding people who are sick 

 

Washing hands regularly 

 

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces 

 

Coughing or sneezing into a tissue or into your elbow or sleeve 

 

Limiting contact with cigarette smoke or quitting smoking 

 

Taking good care of medical conditions 

 

Getting adequate sleep, exercise, and managing stress 

 

How can you get involved?

You can get involved with World Pneumonia Day by participating in the Pneumolight campaign, which aims to illuminate monuments around the world to raise awareness about pneumonia.
