Just a thought experiment... 🤔
What if the partition of India and Pakistan had never happened? How different would South Asia look today?
Imagine one large economy with a massive population, a highly skilled workforce, strong agriculture, a thriving textile industry, and one of the world's biggest IT sectors.
Today, India has a much larger GDP than Pakistan, with major exports including IT services, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and manufactured goods. Pakistan is well known for its textile industry, sports goods, surgical instruments, and agricultural exports. Together, these strengths could have complemented each other and potentially created an even more powerful economic force.
Think about the resources spent over decades on military build-up, border tensions, and conflicts especially over Kashmir. If partition had never occurred, perhaps those resources could have been invested in education, healthcare, infrastructure, innovation, and economic growth instead.
It's also possible that regions like Jammu & Kashmir and even Bangladesh might have had a very different history.
Of course, history is complex. There were political, religious, cultural, and social reasons behind partition, and it's impossible to know what would have happened. A united nation might have enjoyed enormous economic opportunities, but it could also have faced significant governance, representation, and internal political challenges.
This isn't about changing history or blaming anyone. It's simply a "what if" question that makes us think about how cooperation can sometimes achieve more than conflict.
What do you think?
If partition had never happened, would South Asia be stronger today or would the challenges have outweighed the benefits? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
