The sector currently consumes 7% of the world’s total . It is estimated this will increase to 25% by 2025 as a result of our expanding use of cloud computing and new AI technologies that need a large amount of computing power. The industry alone could produce enough CO2 to result in a 2 degrees Celsius by 2050.

We don’t really think about as a resource but we forget that behind this “cloud” are huge data centres, predominantly owned by Amazon.com, Google or Microsoft. These data centres contain thousands of servers which need round-the-clock electricity to power and most significantly to be cooled.

There are initiatives to make net-zero carbon but with the expected growth it’s uncertain if demand will exceed the improvements in . 🌏🌏

Whilst organisations need to look at their data footprint to make the largest difference, there are things we can do at a personal level to reduce our impact. Remember a server somewhere is powered and cooled storing the accidental video of your feet walking down the high street. 🌏🌏

What can you do?
1. Don’t subscribe to emails you are realistically not going to read.
2. Unsubscribe from existing unnecessary emails
3. When you take a photo (how often do we take more than one?), review them and delete the duplicates
4. Delete unnecessary emails (including your outbox), photos, videos.
If you are like me, the steps above are a huge admin task, so try to do these going forward and chip away at the backlog bit by bit. 🌏🌏
