In this series, we’re looking at language proficiency through the CEFR scale – a system that describes what you can actually do in a language.

In previous posts, we explored levels from A1 to B2. Today, let’s move up and take a closer look at the highest levels: C1 and C2.

🟣 C1 – Advanced
At this level, you don’t really use the language anymore – you simply live in it.
You express yourself naturally and effortlessly. You can move through work, studies, and everyday life in the language with ease and confidence.
➡️ In practice? The language stops feeling like a subject – and feels like a space you operate in.

🟣 C2 – Proficiency (Mastery)
This is the level of true expertise. You don’t just communicate – you master the language in a precise and intentional way.
You can work with language at a very high level: academic writing, translation, publishing, teaching, or other expert fields where accuracy and nuance really matter.
➡️ In practice? You use the language not just fluently, but professionally and with full control over meaning, tone, and detail.

🚩 Common trap?
Not all native speakers operate at C2 level – and that’s completely normal.
C2 reflects a very high level of precision, awareness, and control of the language, often developed through education and extensive use.
So aiming for C2 isn’t always necessary (or realistic) for everyone.

💡 Do you need C1 or C2?
It depends on your goals:
✔️ C1 is often enough for university, high-level jobs, and professional communication
✔️ C2 is usually only required in very specific contexts (e.g. academia, translation, teaching)

💡 Knowing your level:
✔️ helps you plan your studies more effectively
✔️ boosts motivation
✔️ saves time and money
