You need a way-in to the area you don’t have access to. In Zuckerberg’s case, his product was not available in China.

Therefore, when he delivered a speech in Chinese at a prestigious Chinese university, the market believed that he is aiming to open a channel for his product.

I believe he had something else in mind, he is playing a long game.

Before anyone ever listens to your message, you have to build a bridge.
Being friendly is not enough to get people’s attention and listen. I learned that the hard way. The language used by people who live there has its supremacy status among all other languages. To fully get the locals attention, I need to speak their language even though they are fully capable of using foreign languages.

If I am confident in expressing my requests in Polish, I speak without thinking about it. However, when the item in question or the situation at hand is beyond my experience, I realize that I could lose the opportunity grab their attention if I don’t use their language.

Mark Zuckerberg was sending a message to the Chinese government, her officials, and her people when he gave a speech in Chinese in Tsinghua University. He was opening a channel of communication with the Chinese people in the language they use and are proud of. The value of his message transcends his word choice.

This message is one of empathy. To his audience, Mark Zuckerberg demonstrates that by speaking your language, he learns and cares about what is important to you, what you value the most and are against, and more importantly, “I can be trusted.”
