One of the most common (and costly) misconceptions in engineering is this:

“Stainless is Stainless.”

It isn’t.

304 vs 316 - same shine, very different performance.

304 Stainless Steel:
• Contains no molybdenum.
• Highly vulnerable to chlorides such as sea air, salt spray, or coastal mist.

In marine or coastal environments, 304 is not corrosion resistant; it just corrodes slower than carbon steel.

316 Stainless Steel:
• Contains molybdenum.
• Protects against chloride induced pitting and crevice corrosion.
• Designed for marine, coastal, and aggressive environments.

No molybdenum means no chloride protection.

When is 304 actually better?

• Certain acidic environments.
• Food and beverage applications with low chlorides.
• But never by the ocean.

And carbon steel?

• Cheap to buy, but oxidises rapidly.
• Requires coatings, inspections, repairs, and maintenance.
• Every rust spot represents a future cost.

Carbon steel is cheap to buy, but expensive to own.

The takeaway:

Material selection is not about what looks good on a quote today.
It is about what remains safe, durable, and inspectable 10 to 20 years from now.

The environment decides, not the price list.
