The great fortress of San Felipe del Morro guarded the entrance to San Juan Bay for centuries, the crown jewel of Spain's defenses in the Caribbean. Construction stretched across generations, beginning in the 1500s, as Spain turned Puerto Rico into the heavily fortified gateway to its empire in the New World. The walls were raised stone by enormous stone — and that backbreaking labor fell heavily on the shoulders of enslaved Africans and conscripted workers whose names history never recorded. They built one of the most magnificent fortifications in the Americas, and they did it under the lash of the sun and the demands of a distant crown. 💛
