Looking at all the sites that we had the pleasure of documenting and scanning in 3D; only one site has eluded us for many years. We can see it near but it has always been so far.

The Dome of the Rock is one of the most iconic Islamic landmarks in the world, located in Jerusalem on the Al-Aqsa compound (Al-Haram al-Sharif). Built in the late 7th century by the Umayyad Caliph ʿAbd al-Malik, it is the oldest surviving Islamic monument. The structure is an octagonal shrine crowned with a golden dome, built over a sacred rock that holds deep religious significance in Islam, Christianity, and Judaism most notably associated with the Prophet Muhammad’s Night Journey and ascension to heaven.

On a hill overlooking Al-Taybeh, east of Ramallah, stands the Church of St. George.

A silent witness to centuries of faith and history. Built in the Byzantine era, its three interconnected halls once echoed with prayers, and though time weathered its stones, the eastern walls remain remarkably intact. Later, in the Middle Ages, another grand structure rose beside it, weaving layers of history into the same sacred ground.

The church is bound to the memory of Al-Khader, Saint George, honored by both Christians and Muslims across Palestine.

Rediscovered and carefully restored by a Palestinian-French mission, its courtyards revealed secrets long buried. In 2009, archaeologists uncovered a tomb filled with hundreds of artifacts, spanning from the Byzantine period to medieval times, proof that the site had never lost its spiritual heartbeat.

Today, the Church of St. George is more than stone and relics. It is a living testament to resilience, devotion, and shared heritage, inviting scholars and pilgrims alike to step into its halls and feel the weight of history, faith, and unity that has endured across ages.
