An important question: what should river-based plastic capture devices be made of?

Within the TRAP - Freeing Our Rivers from Plastics project, SeaBird is leading this exploration. With over a decade of experience in biodegradable solutions, this French team is identifying materials that combine durability, efficiency, and respect for nature.

These options will be assessed collaboratively - not only within the project consortium, but also with local communities, authorities, and stakeholders in each pilot location. This co-creation approach ensures solutions that are both technically sound and locally relevant.

By the end of the project, TRAP will deliver practical technical guidelines to support organizations interested in implementing nature-based plastic capture systems - helping prevent pollution before it reaches the ocean.

This 3‑year project brings together 9 partners across 4 countries – Portugal, Spain, France, and Ireland, funded by Interreg Atlantic Area.

The community engagement and communication areas of the project are led by 4Change. Instituto Superior Técnico is the leading partner.

☺ The otter has been chosen as a symbol of the project because it is found in all four project countries and depends on healthy waterways to survive.

O projeto TRAP - Libertando os Nossos Rios de Plásticos continua por mais 2 anos e meio e temos a certeza de que muitas e excelentes conquistas se alcançarão em conjunto. Esta é já uma comunidade de guardiões do rio!

The vibrant community of the municipality of Coruche, as well as all the invited professionals, demonstrated their strong connection to the Sorraia River and their commitment to protecting and regenerating it. The TRAP project - Freeing Our Rivers from Plastics - continues for another two and a half years, and we are certain that many excellent achievements will be reached together. This is already a community of river guardians!
