Defining that pivotal moment in your life can be hard – I think I am still trying to define it. Mark Twain once said that ‘the two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why’. Despite my experiences and adventures, I am yet to find out why. Although there are numerous possibilities, I assure you.
From my first venture into the world of creativity as a fashion designer in Jordan, I believe my path was forged in that moment! Emilia Fashion House was borne of my dreamy imagination and a desire to take risks. It was only when my father moved to Qatar that I was introduced to the world of make-up. My job at MAC as a beauty advisor and a business manager was the first step.
Through my love of art, the discovery of being able to create with make-up was a revelation for me. An extension of my own concepts with the bristles of a different brush, yet the same flourishing of passion. Igniting a desire, London beckoned me; bringing me a wealth of knowledge in the world of television make-up. As my studies came to a close, Qatar once again brought me an exciting opportunity with Al Jazeera Children’s Television.
Exciting might just be an understatement, as I am still there to this day!
Despite the excitement of working at Al Jazeera, the opportunities to explore my ideas and develop my talents have been fruitful. Working for Doha Debates and BBC World brought me face to face with the likes of Bill Clinton, Amr Moussa, Toujan Faisal and the former BBC journalist Tim Sebastian.
Within the multitude of colour that I encounter each day, the beauty of make-up is that a moment defines the brush of colour, the sweep of a shade. The yellow tones of a petal for instance or the pink of a nail bring me inspiration; they induce my creative flow. It is one of the reasons that I love to travel, to be able to see the vibrancy of the earth - the colours of nature inspire an ingenuity within me. The magic of the sunset brings me an abundance of imagination, as it is my favorite time of the day. For me, the nobility of purple and the distinct oranges induce a creative inspiration. When I think about inspiration for my work, it can come from anywhere. From a children’s drawing to the colours of a fish; transforming this into art in the form of make-up is inspiration in itself.
Inspiration also comes to me when I think of my three children; an illumination of time in the moments that they were born. The three most special dates for me in reflection of my life so far.

The Allure of the Arabian by Harriet Gyamfuah

Glamour, sophistication, opulence, luxury, elegance, modesty, tradition and fashion are the influences that have helped to create the very latest haute couture in the Middle East. And these principles are truly embedded in the culture and lives of women in The Arabian Gulf. So the very latest creations can be admired and appreciated – and their beauty enhanced - amongst the implicit and explicit values of the people and the breathtaking splendor of the landscapes.
Glamorous abayas with the backdrop of the breathtaking beauty of the desert create a scene that is perfection. Or along the Corniche, with the sea sparkling in the sunshine and the promise of a whisper of a cooling breeze when the sheer and lightweight fabric of the abaya may flutter gently along with the fronds of the palm trees.
And in the evening, the spectacular sunsets remind us of the beauty and joy of living within the Gulf – where glamour is a natural part of everyday existence.
Elegance is an integral part of living in The Gulf where women are graceful in their movements and their style. People are gracious and hospitable and their generosity is embedded in their beliefs and ways of life. Women are cherished and esteemed and they are intrinsically aware of their status which is expressed implicitly in their grace and elegance.
And elegance is to be found everywhere – in the cursive style of the Arabic script which flows so beautifully like the beauty of the cresting sand dunes.
Modesty is the basis for women’s clothing, reflecting their status in society and in their families. And our beloved Royal Family is our guiding light in the way women live their lives. Women can play a role outside of the family home but must dress modestly and our beautiful abayas help us to achieve this.
We can feel confident and yet protected when we cover ourselves in public as well as knowing that we are wearing the very latest fashions. And in the privacy of our homes we can enjoy wearing the more colorful clothes of the same fashion houses.
Traditional Arabic culture has been preserved in The Gulf. The past is a treasure trove of legends and myths, of ancient wonders and glorious achievements. All across the world, Arabian horses are highly prized, bred by our ancestors for their intelligence and sensitivity. A visit to the Souk Wakif gives us a glimpse of the past with the aroma of spices, the bales of jewel colored fabrics and nearby, the dhows in the sea, a scene that endures forever.
The black abaya is part of this tradition.
Fashion in the modern world is taking these traditions and updating them with the very latest enhancements. Dolce and Gabbana have designed beautiful abayas and embellished them with delicate details from the brand’s Italian heritage with lace, lemons and roses.
Add the label’s jewelry, oversized sunglasses and patterned bags and your look is complete. Other brands to watch are DNKY, Oscar de la Renta, Hilfiger, Mango and Monique Lhuillier.
By adding some Swarovksi crystals or perhaps a black lace trim the abaya can be transformed into a fashion statement and at the same time maintaining those values – glamour, sophistication, opulence, luxury, elegance, modesty and tradition.
Luxury affects all our senses. We love to see, to hear, to taste, to touch – the finest, the softest, the most amazing. And we can indulge our tastes here in
The Gulf with world class restaurants and luxurious beauty salons. For a truly relaxing day there is nothing better than spending time in a spa where you are pampered and uplifted.
And to look beautiful we need to feel beautiful so that our appearance is enhanced when we wear the very latest fashions.
Sophisticated cities have risen from the desert, with their dazzling buildings and spectacular sights. And still they arise: modern cities develop and expand. Futuristic facilities are designed and illustrations are displayed, each one seeming impossible – so ambitious and unimaginable. A whole island rising from the sea? It must have been considered fantastical. And yet now we have Pearl Island.
And so it is fitting that our clothing should be sophisticated too.
Opulent, iconic buildings are part of our heritage, built upon the natural reserves beneath our land. And before this discovery, pearls – so highly valued and prized because of their opulence – were our treasure. And so opulence is embedded in our history and now we can wear clothes that display our love of exquisite designs and appreciation for the creation of clothes and accessories that display the dedication and skill of those who share them with us.
When we look intently at our objects of desire we know that each one began simply as a concept in someone’s mind and now we feel it in our hands and enjoy the anticipation of wearing it.
