A special stop in Frankfurt when the Städel Museum () presents one of its most compelling exhibitions of the year with Stillleben mit Gemüse by Elmgreen & Dragset (), an immersive intervention that transforms the museum into a psychological theatre of observation, illusion, humour, and unease. Unfolding across the institution almost like a treasure hunt, the exhibition encourages visitors to continuously question what belongs to the permanent collection and what has subtly entered through the artists’ intervention: a child sketching beneath Goethe’s portrait, an abandoned baby before a Pietà, suspended figures hovering above staircases, rows of empty office cubicles confronting the rituals of ambition, labour, and contemporary life.

Speaking with the Duo artists firsthand revealed how precisely every placement and interruption was conceived. There is also a fascinating continuation of the spatial and institutional dialogue they previously explored at the Musée d'Orsay, though here at the Städel, the experience feels even more expansive, spanning across centuries of art history, architecture, and perception itself. At a time when Frankfurt is simultaneously presenting major exhibitions dedicated to Monet and Bruegel, the city reaffirms itself as one of Europe’s most understated and layered cultural destinations.
