In plastic injection, the mould is often treated by purchasing as a one-time investment: quoted, ordered, launched, approved and then expected to perform.
But a mould is a ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐๐๐๐๐ฒ๐บ exposed to pressure, temperature, friction, material aggression, cooling deposits, repeated movement, clamping force, ejection stress and millions of cycles. And like any mechanical system, it does not usually become a problem overnight.
It slowly loses control. First, the process needs small adjustments. Then flash starts to appear. Then dimensions begin to drift. Then cooling becomes less efficient.
After that, cycle time increases, cavity balance changes and quality starts asking for more checks. By the time purchasing sees the problem, the technical degradation has usually been visible for some time. This is why mould performance should be monitored as part of ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐ฟ๐ถ๐๐ธ.
Tool care is much more than basic maintenance. It includes monitoring parting lines, vents, slides, lifters, inserts, ejectors, cooling channels, hot runner behaviour, wear areas, corrosion, deposits, polishing condition, shut-off surfaces and the history of engineering changes. A small issue in one of these areas can influence myriad variables. These are signals that the production system may start losing stability.
For example, reduced venting can create burns or filling instability. Cooling deposits can increase cycle time and affect shrinkage. Insert wear can change local dimensions. Poor ejector condition can create marks, deformation or inconsistent release. These may become ๐ฐ๐ผ๐๐, ๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ฎ๐ ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฑ ๐ฐ๐๐๐๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ.
For purchasing, mould maintenance should be part of supplier evaluation because the supplier is protecting the asset that makes production possible. A supplier without strong tool care discipline may still produce good parts at launch but on the long-term stability will depend on luck, firefighting and corrective maintenance.

Toolings do contain assumptions about the drawing, material, tolerances, process capability, validation requirements, volumes, cycle time, quality standards, and customer expectations.
If those assumptions are weak, the tool will expose them later, and when the tool exposes them, the cost is no longer theoretical.
It affects timeline, margin, supplier performance, launch readiness, internal engineering capacity, and customer confidence.
