The famous philosopher Rene Descartes dedicated a large part of his life to the study of the pineal gland, claiming that it is "the main seat of the soul." He believed that it mediated the connection between body and soul. The pineal gland is also often mentioned in the writings of Pythagoras, Plato and Iamblichus, as well as in the Egyptian, Tibetan and Roman Catholic tradition.
