EU Moves to Simplify Digital Regulations
On 19 November the European Commission introduced a package aimed at simplifying Europeโs digital rule book. The reforms cover multiple areas including AI regulation, data protection, cookie consent and digital identity. The stated goal is to reduce compliance burdens while maintaining high standards of protection and enabling innovation.
The proposals include delaying certain provisions of the AI Act until 2027 for high risk systems and reducing the frequency of consent requests for cookies. While the changes are framed as โsimplificationโ not deregulation, critics warn the shift could weaken safeguards for users and give large tech firms greater flexibility.
