In May 2012, the jury trial at District Court found for Google, stating that Google had not infringed on the Java patents, and that the APIs were uncopyrightable. On appeal in May 2014, the Federal Circuit partially reversed the district court ruling, ruling in Oracle's favor on the copyrightability issue, and remanding the issue of copyright and fair use back to the District Court. A second jury trial related to the fair use issue still ruled in favor of Google in May 2016.

Oracle appealed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which found in March 2018 that the use had not been fair use, but merely untransformed reuse, and concluded that the purpose of Google's reuse had not been transformative, minimal, or intended to permit interoperability. It was much more closely related to Google's commercial intentions, the benefits of attracting existing Java developers to the nascent Android platform, and "saving [the] drudgery" of rewriting around 11,000 lines of code which Google could have rewritten if it had wished to do so.[1] The Court of Appeals therefore found in favor of Oracle, with the case currently remanded to the lower district court to determine damages.
