Your mouth may reveal more about your health than you think.
The mouth is often one of the first places where signs of systemic disease become visible. Changes such as persistent gum inflammation, mouth ulcers, dry mouth, unusual bleeding, infections, or changes in the oral tissues may sometimes indicate underlying health conditions affecting the rest of the body.
According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), decades of research have shown important links between oral diseases and conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, pregnancy complications, dementia, and certain cancers. Scientists are continuing to investigate the biological mechanisms behind these oral-systemic connections, including inflammation, immune responses, and the movement of oral bacteria into the bloodstream.
Regular dental examinations do much more than detect cavities. They can help identify early changes that may warrant further medical evaluation, making oral health an important part of overall health care.
Healthy gums, healthy teeth, and routine dental visits are essential components of maintaining whole-body health.
