UNITED KINGDOM/RUSSIA: On 16 June, Britain became the first G7 country to sanction newly acquired LNG carriers linked to Russia's Arctic LNG 2 project. The package targets four LNG carriers acquired for roughly $110 million, reflagged to Russia, and now en route to China. It also designates more than 20 oil tankers, Yandex Bank, insurer Rosgosstrakh, and a GRU procurement network.

Enforcement now targets not just the hull but the full operating chain, from banking and insurance to master criminal liability. It follows the 14 June English Channel boarding of shadow fleet tanker Smyrtos, laden with Russian oil, which led to criminal charges against the vessel's master, and a 17 June G7 commitment to strengthen oil and gas sanctions on Russia.

Advisory: Organizations with shipping, chartering, insurance, or trade-finance exposure to Russian-linked vessels should screen counterparties across the full operating chain, including P&I providers, intermediary owners, and crew management arrangements, not only the designation lists themselves.

When sanctions enforcement expands from vessel designation to financial network targeting, criminal charges against a vessel master, and physical interdiction within a single week, the compliance question is no longer which ships are listed but which counterparties, insurers, and service providers may already be exposed.

Mosaic Forum 2026 - Navigating Trade, Power & Compliance in a Fragmented World

Alessandro Martello, CEO of NSSG, attended the Mosaic Forum 2026 – Middle East & Africa Edition in Cairo, Egypt, contributing to the panel discussion β€œTrade, Power and Compliance: Global Business in a Fragmented World.”

Events such as Mosaic Forum provide valuable opportunities to exchange perspectives on the strategic, regulatory, and operational challenges shaping the future of global business.
