How can I check if my employment is legal in Romania?

Can I change my employer as a foreign worker in Romania?

Changing employer is not automatic.

In most cases, you must:
• obtain a new work authorization
• update or extend your right of stay

Can I work in Romania with only a residence permit?

The situation

Many migrants believe that a residence permit = the right to work.
❌ This is FALSE in most cases.

What the law says

To work legally in Romania, a non-EU citizen needs:
• A residence permit for work purposes
AND
• An employment authorization, issued for a specific employer

These are different documents, with different legal roles.

What you need to do
• Check the purpose written on your residence permit (work / studies / family reunification)
• Make sure the employer has an employment authorization issued in your name
• Work only for the employer mentioned in the documents

What NOT to do
• ❌ Do not start working “on a trial basis” without proper documents
• ❌ Do not work for an employer other than the one stated in the authorization
