To support the New York City TNR community, Neighborhood Cats is making winter shelters available at or below cost and providing straw for free.

These shelters consist of a Styrofoam box wrapped in heavy plastic, a plywood extension "porch" for feeding in bad weather, and a shingled roof. They measure 49"L x 12"W x 14"H, weigh about 18 pounds, and come stuffed with straw. Extra straw is available while it lasts. Shelters are $30 each.

The next pick-up will be on Staten Island (ZIP 10312) on Saturday, October 18, and Sunday, October 19, 2025, noon to 2:00 p.m. both days.

"For dogs and cats who lived their lives in fear, this decision marks a step toward freedom. Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, has officially banned the sale of dog and cat meat, ending a cruel trade where animals were captured, transported in terror, and killed under inhumane conditions. For years, animal-welfare groups exposed the brutality through images and videos of dogs tightly tied in sacks and cats crammed into overcrowded cages, raising public awareness across the country. Growing concern over cruelty and serious public-health risks fueled calls for change, and communities demanded a safer, kinder future for both animals and people. Now, markets that once sold dog and cat meat are permanently closed, providing these animals with long-overdue protection. Animal organizations are hailing this as a historic victory and hope it inspires other regions in Indonesia to follow the same compassionate path.
