As contemporary urban murals are increasingly acknowledged as part of our cultural heritage, their conservation is becoming a significant challenge. These works are often exposed to vandalism, while conventional cleaning methods, such as solvents or mechanical abrasion, may compromise the integrity of the original pictorial layer.

In our study, we investigated a non-contact cleaning approach based on Nd:YAG laser irradiation, assessing three distinct emission regimes on mock-up samples prepared with commercial graffiti spray paints applied to lime-based plaster. The research explores the potential of laser cleaning as a controlled and selective method for the conservation of contemporary mural heritage.

This work contributes to the growing field of heritage science applied to modern and urban artistic surfaces, where the balance between effective intervention and material preservation is essential.

This SI focuses on advanced photonic technologies and digital twin frameworks applied to the non-invasive diagnosis, monitoring, and sustainable conservation of cultural heritage. Contributions addressing experimental methods, data integration, modelling strategies, and decision-support tools for preventive conservation are particularly welcome.

The issue is edited by dr. Monica Dinu, dr. Anastasia Giakoumaki and dr. Luminita Ghervase, and reflects an active collaboration between ฮŠฮดฯฯ…ฮผฮฑ ฮคฮตฯ‡ฮฝฮฟฮปฮฟฮณฮฏฮฑฯ‚ ฮบฮฑฮน ฮˆฯฮตฯ…ฮฝฮฑฯ‚ and INOE 2000.
