Concrete and brick left bare to express, through texture, the rawness of their material. In the dry climate of Lima, Peru, as you walk through the residential area of the Miraflores Barrio, you cannot help but feel like you stepped into some kind of modern garden of Eden. The climate supports not only the use of these materials for the final finish of the facades but also an abundace of enclosed urban parks, each overflowing with lush vegetation. As I got lost in the details of the brick facades, in the way they bend and fold to create recesses in the volume, I felt truly comforted by the natural feel of this urban landscape.

Texture, light and material at play. A small sample of art from the immensely talented pre-Columbian civilizations.

Cuban architecture has evolved over 600 years, beginning with the Spanish colonizers’ invasion in the early 16th century.

In recent years, the interior design community is beginning to acknowledge the baggage the term might have - and to explore how the style may be appreciated whilst also acknowledging the harm and trauma of the Colonial era.

Fountains, patios, and beautiful tiles are just a few of the typical Spanish and Moorish elements that the first colonists came with them. They did, however, adapt these elements so that they would look well in Cuba and hold up to the country’s hot, muggy weather.

Traditional residences feature " Portales” built onto their façades to provide protection from the sun and rain in the humid subtropical climate. Metal “Rejas” were installed over windows to ward off break-ins and improve ventilation.

El Dandy, lovely eclectic vibe with terazzo table tops. Can't fail with terrazzo, it's durable, versitale and low maintenance.
