For Russian people, it is the way of saying goodbye to the winter and welcoming the spring. Pancake is the symbol of the holiday. It is the representation of both – the sun in the pagan tradition, and the last opportunity to enjoy dairy producst before the Great Lent.

What is interestig, every day of the Maslenitsa week has a special meaning. For example, Monday is considered a welcoming day. People make a straw doll called Lady Maslenitsa. It symbolises winter and becomes the centre of the celebration.

Sunday is the final day, or a day of forgiving. People say sorry to each other for all the wrong things they have done and burn Lady Maslenitsa doll. This practice has become an almost iconic symbol of the festival.
