Here are 10 important things to know before visiting Rwanda — a small but incredibly beautiful and welcoming country often called “The Land of a Thousand Hills.” 🇷🇼

🌍 1. Safety and Stability

Rwanda is one of Africa’s safest countries. The capital, Kigali, is clean, organized, and has low crime rates. Police presence is visible, and locals are generally very helpful to visitors.

💵 2. Currency and Payments

The local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF).

Credit cards (especially Visa and MasterCard) are accepted in hotels and big restaurants, but cash is still important for rural areas.

ATMs are available in major towns.

🛂 3. Visa and Entry

Many nationalities can get a visa on arrival or apply online for an e-visa.

Citizens of all African countries and the Commonwealth often enjoy visa-free or easy entry.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months.

🌦️ 4. Best Time to Visit

Dry season (June–September & December–February) is best for gorilla trekking and hiking.

The wet season (March–May & October–November) is greener but rainier — still great for photography.

🦍 5. Gorilla Trekking Permits

Rwanda is famous for mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park.

A gorilla trekking permit costs around $1,500, and must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) or a local tour operator.

🚗 6. Transport and Roads

Kigali International Airport is the main entry point.

Roads are in good condition, but driving is on the right-hand side.

Buses and motorbike taxis (motos) are affordable and common.

Always wear a helmet if riding a moto!

🏙️ 7. Cleanliness and Environment

Rwanda is extremely clean — plastic bags are banned nationwide!
Community clean-up days (Umuganda) happen every last Saturday of the month. Don’t litter — it’s taken seriously

👗 8. Culture and Dress Code

Rwandans value modesty and respect

Dress neatly, especially in towns or when visiting government buildings
