The Effective Altruism (EA) Rwanda Journey.

3 years ago, after completing the introductory course on Effective Altruism, Fasoranti Fash Damilola began a simple experiment:

Could a thoughtful EA community grow in Rwanda?

The early stage was small but deliberate.

The community hosted different welcome sessions, bringing together curious participants to explore EA ideas.

One in-person meetup followed, and a number of participants progressed to complete the EA Intro Course, moving from curiosity to deeper engagement.

But as the community grew slowly, a deeper question emerged:

What would it take to build a stronger EA community here?

Fash realized the next step was investing in capacity and knowledge.

Over the past year, he completed three advanced EA programs:

• In-Depth Effective Altruism Course
• Career Planning Program
• Effective Thesis Accelerator

These experiences strengthened his understanding of cause prioritization, cost-effectiveness, and impact-focused community building.

The next shift came in Spring 2026.

Fash joined the Community & Network / Organiser Support Program (C&N/OSP) by The Centre for Effective Altruism, where he connected with organisers from different countries and was matched with a mentor, Estelle (Co-ED Altruism South Africa)

Together they completed 4 mentoring sessions focused on the future of EA Rwanda.

Those conversations produced concrete outcomes:

• Clearer growth strategy
• Stronger community structure
• Identification of new team members

Instead of remaining a single-organiser effort, EA Rwanda expanded into a team.

Fash invited 3 community members to join the leadership effort. All 3 accepted, increasing the coordination team from 1 to 4 people, that's a 300% increase in leadership capacity.

Momentum continued over the last 30 days.

Learning Progress
• 75% of the team is now enrolled in or has completed the In-Depth EA Course, strengthening shared understanding of EA principles such as cause prioritization, cost-effectiveness, and long-term thinking.

Coordination
• 1 in-person strategy meeting
• 3 weekly coordination meetings
• 100% attendance across all meetings

Each team member now holds clear responsibilities aligned with their strengths and goals.

Planning Ahead:
The team has also begun developing the EA Rwanda 2026 Community Calendar, which will guide learning programs, discussions, and impact-focused initiatives while connecting with the wider EA ecosystem, including groups like 80,000 Hours and Rethink Priorities.

Looking back, three years ago:
• 1 organiser and a few curious participants.

Today:
• 4-person coordination team
• 75% engaged in advanced EA learning
• 4 hours of structured mentoring
• 4 strategy meetings in 1 month
• 2026 roadmap in development

The numbers are still small, but they show momentum.

We're moving from an idea to a growing team committed to using evidence and reason to do the most good.
