Watching a match from the corner, your voice matters more than you think.
Not because you’re loud…
But because of what you say.
In competition—especially with kids—there’s already pressure, adrenaline, and limited attention.
If all they hear is “SWEEP!”, “PASS!”, or “GET UP!”, they still have to figure out how… and that hesitation can cost them.
But being loud isn’t wrong.
Sometimes, it’s exactly what they need.
The key is understanding why you’re saying what you’re saying.
There are 4 types of communication during a match:
1. Technical cues (clarity)
When they’re stuck → give something they can do immediately.
“Foot on hip.”
“Control the far leg.”
“Block the shoulder.”
2. Guided options (decision-making)
When they’re engaged → offer options, not just commands.
Let them think, adapt, and solve.
3. Energy cues (commitment)
When they hesitate or lacking energy → that’s when you get loud.
“GO!”
“NOW!”
“YOU GOT IT!”
4. Regulation cues (control & composure)
When they’re rushing or tense → slow them down.
“Breathe.”
“Relax.”
“Control first.”
“Manage… then progress.”
Sometimes the athlete already knows what to do.
They just need:
– clarity
– direction
– a push
– or control
Good coaching isn’t about being loud or quiet.
It’s about knowing what to say, when to say it, and why.

In this instance I teach the individual, not the group. This makes sense for Essam as He got it and understood it on his second try. I always tell them that we have fundamentals which is what everyone needs to know and individual styles what only some should know. Also in a fun way we get to know each other better as you can see in the video and create our own language for certain things, that creates a bond in competition where we can speak in code where only me and him will know what to do. This way we don’t give the other side knowledge of what’s coming next.
Now you tell me doesn’t all Japanese names for techniques sound like sushi ?
