NEOM

NEOM is happening - I’m doing an epic 2 month road trip around to visit the new and emerging destinations. Last week I drove around the whole of the NEOM region (which is the same size as Belgium and larger than Kuwait!) and saw a lot of of the new developments taking place, including the site of NEOM’s linear city, The Line.

Despite scepticism and a perception that it might just be a dream idea, the project is really happening with significant work underway.

-Placemaking: NEOM is an idea that’s being turned into a place. It’s a giant placemaking exercise on a sparsely populated land with striking . The 26,000 sq km area takes up a portion of the province of Tabuk.

-NEOM is Open: It’s an open region that you can drive around in. As you drive around, you can see signs explaining what each construction project is and which companies are involved.

-The South: The southern part of the NEOM region is really where it feels ‘NEOM’ is, at present. It’s where the project has put its main footprint: this is where , and are. At the centre of this southern stretch, between the old towns of Sharma and Gayal, is NEOM Community 1. This is NEOM’s first major residential and office compound for staff, which is full of high-end prefabricated housing units. (This is where the ‘I ❤️ NEOM’ sign is).

-The Line: Huge are well underway to prepare for its (or at least part of it). Work is taking place at different sites along the entire length of the 170km-long project including tunnelling sites (e.g. see here: https://lnkd.in/eip7yy_m) and work to create the Spine: the high speed link running the length of the project. You can see significant stretches of earth that have been dug out and piled into hills. New roads run alongside the site which you can drive along and see a lot of the work underway (e.g. https://lnkd.in/eqe5sQDT).

- : Site teams are beginning to move to the site where the new NEOM International Airport will be built (towards the Eastern end of The Line). The region already has 1 new airport: NEOM Bay International Airport, which opened in 2019.

-Trojena: New roads have been built to make the mountains more accessible including a road into the Trojena valley where work has started.
