I have just started reading The Liver Doctor by Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips.
In one sense, I was a close witness to the birth of this book.
We worked in the same office, and I still remember him sharing every development with excitement, the story series on Twitter, the moment HarperCollins offered him the book deal, the thrill of seeing the project take shape, the pressure of deadlines, the days he took leave from office just to complete the manuscript on time, and even the joy of seeing the graphics drawn by an excellent artist.
I had even read a few portions before publication.
So when I finally held the book in my hands, as a very special gift from him, with a deeply personal note that I do not wish to share publicly, I thought I already knew what this book was.
But I was wrong.
Do not let the title deceive you.
A book written by a doctor, carrying the title “The Liver Doctor”, may make you think this is a strictly medical book, packed with clinical information, explanations and professional seriousness.
It is not.
This is, above everything else, a human story told in a clinical setting.
It is storytelling at its finest, filled with emotion, memory, conflict, uncertainty, science and compassion. The medical information does not stand outside the story like a lecture. It breathes inside it.
That is why this book is not meant only for doctors or medical students.…
