Mud pumps are the equipment that develop necessary power to pump the mud from suction tanks all the way trough circulating system to the flow line. There are two types of mud pumps duplex and triplex, the main difference is that duplex pumps are double acting, it will pump fluid while the piston strokes forward and backwards having two sets of suction valves and discharge valve per piston/liner, for the triplex pump the sucking action is done while piston strokes back and pumping action is done while piston strokes forward having one suction valve and one relief valve per piston/liner, for this reason duplex pumps can pump larger amount of fluids at same strokes per minute than the triplex pump, but can develop less amount of pressure at same HP, also for the same pump the larger the piston diameter the more amount of fluid it will be able to pump but the less the maximum pressure piston/liner will withstand. The other factor affecting mud operation it is volumetric efficiency, this is the ratio between real volume pumped and theoretical volume calculated, for this mud from a calibrated tank need to be pumped by a know amount of strokes, after this the actual volume pumped is divided by the theoretical calculated volume. To calculate pump capacity Barrels/stroke these formulas are available; for duplex pumps Fp=0,00016.Ls.E.(2.(dl^2)-dr^2) [bbl/stk] where Fp is pump displacement in bbl/stk, Ls is length of stroke in inches, E is efficiency, dl is diameter of liner in inches and dr diameter of rod in inches; for the triplex pump Fp=(Ls.dl^2.E)/4117,7 [bls/stk]. For both pumps calculation of horse power developed at certain pressure P (psi) and caudal Q (GPM) is HP= (P.Q)/1714. For a F1600 series triplex pump it will take fluid direct from suction tank or wherever it’s lined up to the suction manifold, from there the backward stroke of liner rod will allow fluid to go trough suction valve individually for each piston/liner depending of the crank sha
