Electra, UrbanV, and Signature Aviation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop infrastructure and operations for a new regional mobility model using ultra-short takeoff and landing aircraft.

The collaboration, announced today (Tuesday), combines Electra’s EL9 hybrid-electric 9‑passenger aircraft — capable of operating from runways as short as 150 feet — with UrbanV’s vertiport development expertise and Signature Aviation’s global network of private aviation facilities. The partnership aims to create a distributed network of access points for point-to-point regional travel, referred to as “Direct Aviation.”

The companies intend to identify priority sites and develop specific agreements for deployment. The model is designed for scalability across different regions and use cases, including potential cargo operations.

The initiative targets routes of roughly 50 to 250 miles, where driving is time-consuming and traditional commercial flights often require indirect routing through major hubs.

Electra’s Direct Aviation Market Outlook estimates more than 35 million such regional passenger trips occur daily in the U.S., with over 6,000 routes seeing more than 1,000 travelers per day. These trips are largely unserved by current air services.

LODD Autonomous has initiated the certification program for its Hili hybrid cargo aircraft with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

The launch of the certification program marks Hili’s transition from aircraft development and flight testing into the formal certification phase, a critical step towards achieving commercial entry into service following a demonstration of compliance with the highest airworthiness and safety standards.

Hili is a hybrid-powered vertical take-off and landing ( ) aircraft being designed and developed by LODD in to transport payloads of up to 250 kilograms over distances of up to 700 kilometers, making it one of the longest-range cargo programs currently under development in the region.

The aircraft is set to reshape regional cargo transportation, enabling faster, more efficient, and more sustainable healthcare, energy, humanitarian and industrial supply chains.
