☀️ HELPING CHILDREN STAY SUN SAFE ☀️

As we move through the summer months, it is important that children understand how to enjoy time outdoors safely and protect themselves from harmful UV exposure.

I am writing to local primary schools to highlight Sun Safe Schools, a free national programme run by the skin cancer prevention charity Skcin.

📚 The programme provides schools with practical resources, lesson plans and guidance to help children learn about sun safety from an early age.

🧴 It covers simple but important steps such as seeking shade, wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen properly.

📈 With melanoma skin cancer cases reaching a record high in the UK, early education and prevention matter.

Sun Safe Schools is a straightforward way for schools to help young people build healthy habits and understand how to stay safe in the sun.

If you’re a primary school teacher or would like more information about keeping your children safe in the sun, further information is available at:

🚨 POLICE UPDATE: FARNHAM ROAD 🚨

I know residents will be concerned by reports of an incident in Farnham Road, Harold Hill, yesterday afternoon. As such I wanted to share the verbatim update I had from the police last night:

One male is under arrest for GBH. One male is under arrest for harassment. Contrary to rumours appearing online, no weapons were used in this incident.

Thank you to the police and emergency services for their swift work in making arrests.

When I said with confidence, nine months ago, that Deputy Prime Minister, Angela Rayner, would resign before Kemi Badenoch ever did, I was scoffed at.

I should have added, ‘And she’ll outlast Keir Starmer’

🍻 NOMINATING OUR COMMUNITY PUB HEROES 🍻

I’m looking for recommendations from local residents, landlords and pub teams for this year’s Community Pub Hero Awards.

I’ll be nominating The Crumpled Horn in Upminster after its brilliant Soul All-Dayer raised over £2,000 for Saint Francis Hospice. That was a fantastic effort by everyone who organised and supported the event.

However, if there are any pubs which you would like to be considered for nomination, tag them in the comments with details of their community work, be it charity fundraising, support for local causes, backing of grassroots sport, work to tackle loneliness and so on👇

You can also nominate a pub yourself, just head to the Community Pub Hero Awards website and follow the instructions!

These awards are run by Pub Aid and recognise pubs that go above and beyond for their communities fundraising, supporting local causes or groups and providing a welcoming place for residents to come together.

Finalists to the awards will be invited to the awards ceremony on Tuesday 8 September in the House of Commons in collaboration with the All Party Parliamentary Beer Group.

Pubs play such an important role in our local communities, and I know there are many across the constituency doing great work.

🌟 GREAT NEWS FOR HAROLD WOOD FOUNDATION 🌟

I’m pleased to see that Harold Wood Foundation has been awarded £5,000 from the Lower Thames Crossing Community Fund to support its work in the local community.

The funding will help the Foundation develop its plans for a community hub in Harold Wood on the library site, bringing residents together and supporting local wellbeing.

🤝 I recently met Rachel Grimwood of the Foundation to discuss her plans for keeping Harold Wood library in community hands.

💬 Harold Wood has a strong community spirit, and it is good to see local volunteers putting forward ideas to improve community life and create more opportunities for residents to connect.

👏 Congratulations to everyone involved in securing this funding.

For too long, we’ve implicitly decided that childhood and parenting must simply adapt to the darker manifestations of the internet as a reality of modern life.

Giving parents the support that they need is not the same as the state stripping them of their ultimate responsibilities. But when harm from social media to our children is real and growing, it is clear that the current approach is not enough. This is why Conservatives have supported getting under-16s off harmful social media and why we are glad the government now agrees.

But the PM’s u-turn, timed for the Makerfield by-election, has left officials’ heads spinning trying to retrofit policy to his Damascene conversion…

A telling exchange between Northern Irish MP, Jim Allister, and Tech Minister, Kanishka Narayan, this week.

Ministers have not before been clear whether tech regulation is on the table in the EU-UK reset talks. The Financial Times was briefed that DSIT ministers were resisting its inclusion - but Kanishka seems to suggests it's now a matter of live negotiation.

Freedom to draw up our own tech laws has been a major Brexit benefit. Even Brussels bureaucrats are admitting now that the EU's AI Act is stifling innovation and writing Europe out of the tech story.

That's why I recently flagged the risk that the EU-UK reset would be used as a ratchet to pull us into the EU's regulatory orbit in areas where the UK has developed competitive advantage.

Labour must not fall for it.

🧬 CANCER PREVENTION ACTION WEEK 🧬

This week marks World Cancer Research Fund’s Cancer Prevention Action Week, which is focusing on the growing problem of health misinformation.

📱 Misleading claims about cancer prevention, diets, supplements and ‘superfoods’ can spread quickly online and make it harder for people to find trusted, evidence-based advice.

👩‍⚕️ New polling commissioned by WCRF found that 44% of NHS staff say patients raise inaccurate or misleading nutrition or supplement information at least once a week.

✅ To help people sense-check health information online, WCRF has developed the TRUST Test, a simple tool to help assess whether advice is reliable before acting on it or sharing it.

Anyone with concerns about cancer, treatment or prevention should speak to their GP.

New Health Secretary, James Murray, was a Treasury Minister when VAT bills started being issued on medicines given for free in clinical trials. So he’s now perfectly placed to put a stop to this craziness, which is seeing critical, innovative treatments pulled from sick adults…

Never one to miss a virtue-signalling beat, Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has blocked the Met from contracting with tech company, Palantir, the left’s new bogeyman.

Now Londoners have a potential legal challenge to fund and Police Chief, Sir Mark Rowley, is spelling out what it means for frontline services and Londoners’ safety.

If there were legitimate concerns or policy questions about any company seeking to handle sensitive data, they should have been bottomed out between Ministers, Mayor and Met long before it got to this point.

As it is, this smacks of ideological grandstanding of the kind in which our dear Mayor excels.

At a time when criminals are using tech to deceive, bribe, steal from and hound decent people, the Met leadership now has to spend its time lobbying its political master rather than getting the tools officers need.
