This book helps anyone who is transitioning into or considering transitioning into management—a fresh and relatable read, about organizational culture. Further, it's rare to find a book written by designers and designer turn managers.
Apart from Amazing illustrations by Pablo Stanly, which summaries each chapter with informative but candid cartoons, I love how honest and relatable the book is. Julie has managed to create a handbook for any Silicon Valley generation individual contributor converted managers. Her writing style is simple to comprehend. If I must pick one, I will choose the second part of chapter one which is a simple self-check if you are considering switching to management, A self-check to know
whether you are turning for right reasons. Additionally, I also love the
chapter two, which is a guide for the first 90 days for a new manager.
But if you are looking for an excellent theoretical framework or new management philosophy, this might not be the book. Many chapters are like really, really good medium posts on independent topics. Topics range from giving feedback (Yes, but that chapter is nothing compare to radical condor) to hiring people for your team.
I would rate this book 4 out of 5 as it helped me to be a decent individual contributor turned manager, but I had to read a lot more to master each topic. When I master the content of this book became useless.
