📣 📣 📣 We are thrilled to announce the release of episode 12 of the Sustainable Lighting Design Podcast! 📣 📣 📣

In this episode ”Anthropogenic Light: Exploring Ethics, Challenges, and Opportunities”, we have the pleasure of speaking with Professor Kevin Houser, a renowned expert in lighting and human factors at Oregon State University and the chief engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. With over 150 publications on light and lighting and numerous awards, Kevin joins us in this season’s final episode to discuss the past, present, and future of lighting design and research.

Join us for an enlightening conversation as Kevin takes us on a journey through the fascinating world of anthropogenic light at night. Discover how human-made lighting affects our environment and health, and explore the Jevons Paradox in lighting, where improvements in lighting technology lead to increased overall consumption of light.

Furthermore, we explore the ethical implications of using light to influence human behavior and health, providing thought-provoking perspectives. The episode wraps up with a discussion on human-centric lighting, exploring its definition, implications, and practical tips for implementing sustainable lighting practices.

”Anthropogenic, really is a more precise term. It’s human-made, human-caused light that we’re introducing into the natural environment outdoors, often in unnatural ways.” Professor Kevin Houser.

Join us for an insightful and engaging conversation that covers a wide range of topics in sustainable lighting design, offering valuable insights for both professionals and enthusiasts.

Tune in and enjoy!

🎉🎉🎉New podcast episode!🎉🎉🎉

In this episode ” Energy efficiency: accelerating the transition to Net Zero buildings ” , we talk with Associate Professor Tarek Rakha to explore the nuances of net-zero versus net-positive buildings and address the role that electric and natural lighting have when aiming to achieve energy efficiency. Further, we discuss how specific research and tangible data serve as critical allies for vulnerable communities to face the impacts of climate change and inequality. Additionally, Professor Rakha introduces us to his pioneering startup, Lamarr.AI, which utilizes advanced drone technology and artificial intelligence to analyze building structures. An initiative that aims to enhance energy efficiency in existing buildings and promote decarbonization efforts, thereby contributing to a more sustainable future.

Case study Amorepacific Headquarters, South Korea 12/10/2022

📢 A new case study, part of our SLD research-in-practice project, is now available online!

Featuring the Amorepacific project in Seoul, South Korea, this case study is an example of how circular lighting design principles can be applied in commercial buildings. Completed in 2017, the building was designed by David Chipperfield Architects (DCA) in collaboration with HAEAHN Architecture, KESSON and Arup. The circular design principle was achieved through modularity, upgradeability and adaptability of a patented product. The product is an adaptable and re-usable LED luminaire system with the possibility of attaching decorative and technical lenses, providing wide range of lighting performances. CIBSE TM66 Make was run through the lighting system design and production, and the results are included at the end of the report.
The building has received many lighting awards illustrating the excellence of the innovative lighting design solution, and we are happy to share an insight into the lighting design process with you.

🙏🏻 We would like to give special thanks to Emilio Hernandez , to our collaborators at , Andre Martins, and Alexander Rotsch, and Amedeo Musazzi representing for their contribution and continuous collaboration to finalize this case study. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience in the lighting industry.

🗣 Feel free to share the case study within your network and let us know if you have any feedback.
