Rewildering Albedo pilot project
Our main purpose is to build a new, interdisciplinary GCUA2030 network that will: (1) jointly tackle the crucial knowledge gaps on the effects of African megafauna on land surface albedo and energy feedbacks between ecosystems and the atmosphere, and (2) explore rewilding as a novel tool to mitigate climate change in semi-/arid African landscapes.
Last week we have been in South Africa working on two of the project goals:
1. Using a drone based Albedometer, quantify the effects of rewilding on changes in land surface albedo across African semi-/arid rangelands.
2. Transfer skills and expertise in drone technology and drone applications in ecology and land surface studies between the SLU and Nelson Mandela University drone labs.
Come and join our hackaton on sustainable forestry and climate challenges. We are looking for ideas that combines existing knowledge and space-based data. Join our pre-hack webinar on the 15th of February.
Our themes are soil moisture, spruce bark beetles, forest ground damages and forest value chain.
