Today, together with other Baltic and European environmental NGOs, we sent an open letter to Fisheries Ministers ahead of next week's Council discussion on the evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
The European Commission's evaluation concludes that the remains a relevant and important framework for managing our common resource. The challenge is not the policy itself, but persistent gaps in implementation and enforcement.
For the , where key fish populations remain depleted and ecosystem health continues to deteriorate, the priority should be clear:
🐟 Rebuild fish populations
🌊 Strengthen ecosystem-based fisheries management
📋 Fully implement existing CFP commitments
Rather than reopening fisheries legislation, Ministers should focus on implementing existing rules, rebuilding fish populations and restoring the health of the Baltic Sea.
The Baltic Sea does not need another reform debate. It needs action.

For the first time since the 2013 reform, the European Commission has evaluated the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). 🐟🧾
For years, environmental NGOs across Europe have been saying the same thing about the CFP. The Commission’s own evaluation now says it too: the CFP does not need to be reopened. It needs to be implemented.
📆 On 22 June, EU Fisheries Ministers will discuss the evaluation at the AGRIFISH Council. Our message to them is simple:
✔️Don’t reopen the CFP
✔️Implement it
✔️Enforce it
✔️Deliver it

❗️Fish populations in the Baltic are already in crisis. Without action from EU countries, they won't recover, and the Baltic marine ecosystem, along with small-scale fishers and coastal communities that depend on it will pay the price.
The issue isn't the policy. It's the implementation.
If fully implemented and enforced, the (CFP) can support the achievements of three major goals:
🐟 Healthy fish populations
🌊 A living, thriving sea
⚓ A future for coastal communities
