Planned Parenthood Association of Sierra Leone (PPASL) engaged Social Media Influencers, Comedians and Bloggers on Cervical Cancer Prevention messages
On the 30th May 2023, PPASL through the Cervical Cancer project supported by China Aid through UNFPA engaged over twenty (20) Social Media Influencers, Comedians and Bloggers on Cervical Cancer Prevention messages.
The engagement was geared towards building the capacity of these Influencers in order to cascade cervical Cancer Prevention messages through their various social media handles/ platforms. These media Influencers represented different communities and key population groups.
Cervical Cancer is the second most common Cancer affecting women generally in Sierra Leone.
Sis. Sallay Carew Government Focal Person on Cervical Cancer did a presentation on broad range of issues accounting for the spread of Cervical Cancer including prevention messages.
Without mincing words, she explained that every woman who had engaged in s*x is prone to be infected by Cervical Cancer.
The signs of cervical Cancer she went on does not easily manifest and therefore encouraged women and girls aged 25 years and above to opt for free screening at different Government health facilities across the country (Lakka Peripheral Health Unit (PHU), Murray Town Peripheral Health Unit (PHU), King Herman Road Government Hospital, Ross Road Community Health Centre (CHC), Jui Chinese Hospital, Regent Peripheral Health Unit (PHU), Bo Government and Makeni Government Hospital)
Making her statement the Executive Director of PPASL Dr. Sarian Kamara applauded the Influencers for their strides in promoting positive messages on cervical cancer and encouraged them to utilize their various platforms to reach out to the general public. She also encouraged them to join the volunteer wing of the Association as the Association is a volunteer based Association.
Making her closing, remarks, Mrs. Gladys A. Goba the focal person for cervical Cancer at PPASL thanked the influencers for their various efforts in mobilizing communities to visit different health facilities. She also emphasized that they have critical role to play in disseminating vital information on cervical Cancer.
