I grew up believing that Sierra Leone Army are the fiercest fighters in the sub region. Despite the disgrace, suppression, invasion and the shamefully arresting of our soldiers, RSLAF still has a commendable record in all their missions.
Sierra Leone’s army has been part of UN peace operations since the early 1960s, when it first sent troops during the United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC). This marked the beginning of its global peacekeeping engagements.
Since then, Sierra Leone has sent personnel to multiple UN missions outside its own borders. These include operations in Haiti (MINUSTAH), South Sudan (UNMISS) although they acted p**n there but that notwithstanding, the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), Lebanon (UNIFIL), Mali (MINUSMA), and Somalia (UNSOM/UNSOS) among others. In fact, with their intervention, Somalia rebels fled to neighboring countries.
A recent United Nations press release notes Sierra Leone currently contributes uniformed personnel to nine UN peace operations, with one of the largest contingents serving in South Sudan. A significant and unusual feature is that almost two-thirds of these deployed peacekeepers are women. So, Guinea better back off or our female soldiers can take on them soon.
Service in Sierra Leone’s own peacekeeping and stability operation (UNAMSIL)
While not strictly “overseas,” Sierra Leone’s army played a crucial role inside UN peace missions on its own soil as part of the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL), which operated from 1999 to 2005. This mission is widely regarded as one of the most successful UN peacekeeping efforts in Africa. All thanks to the Sierra Leonean soldiers and Nigerian Army.
Under UNAMSIL, local forces alongside international contingents helped:
Disarm and demobilize tens of thousands of ex-combatants, putting a decisive end to the civil war.
Assist in organizing Sierra Leone’s first free and fair elections.
Train thousands of new police officers and rebuild national institutions.
Encourage the voluntary return of more than half a million refugees and internally displaced people.
This peacebuilding work laid the foundation for long-term stability in Sierra Leone and is referenced internationally as a peacekeeping success story.
Regional peace and security roles before and after civil war
Prior to UNAMSIL deployment in Sierra Leone, Sierra Leonean troops have been part of the ECOWAS Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) in the 1990s. They have been part of the peace and security roles in regional conflicts, especially in neighboring Liberia.
After the civil conflict in Sierra Leone, the role of the Sierra Leone Army in regional peacekeeping has become part of the country’s growing identity as a military force. This has prompted them to participate in roles beyond Sierra Leone.
The United Nations has recognized the sacrifice of Sierra Leonean peacekeepers. The United Nations states that over 40 Sierra Leonean uniformed personnel have died in the line of duty while serving in peacekeeping roles.
These records have shown that the Sierra Leone Army has transformed from a force dealing only with internal conflict to a recognized force in regional peacekeeping roles.
