My great-great-grands-parents landed and settled in Gorée Island in the 1800s because it reminded them of their home town of Martinique. The colorful island has since then seen 6 generations growing up in the streets of our family home Rue Malavois.

I have vivid memories of my cousins & I playing all day in the sun, going for a midnight swim in the warm ocean and being awaken early Sunday morning by my grand-mother who did not play about being first in line at the local church.

I believe it’s about time we move on from the “slave island” narrative because yes, it is our history, but this little piece of paradise also has so much more to offer. ✨
