The Somali Women Journalists Rights Association (SOWJRA) stands in solidarity with journalists in Garowe who today held a peaceful protest calling for the immediate release of journalist Suweys Gacayte and demanding justice in her case.
SOWJRA reiterates its call for the protection of press freedom, respect for journalists' rights, and an end to intimidation and harassment of media professionals. A free and independent press is essential to democracy, accountability, and the protection of human rights.

The Somali Women Journalists Rights Association (SOWJRA) strongly condemns the continued detention of journalist Suweys Gacayte, who was arrested in Garowe on 2 July 2026 and transferred to Garowe Central Prison.
Suweys Gacayte, a reporter with Suweys Media, is widely recognized for conducting street interviews that provide ordinary citizens with a platform to express their concerns, experiences, and opinions. Journalism is a fundamental pillar of democracy and must never be criminalized.
SOWJRA is deeply concerned by reports indicating that Ms. Gacayte has been detained without publicly disclosed charges, a court order, or any clear legal basis. Due process and the rule of law must be respected at all times, and any deprivation of liberty must comply with applicable legal procedures.
We join the calls of journalists, media organizations, and human rights defenders demanding the immediate respect for Ms. Gacayte's legal rights. Authorities should either promptly present any lawful charges before a competent court or release her without delay.
SOWJRA further calls on the Puntland authorities to uphold freedom of expression and media freedom, ensure the safety of journalists, and create an environment where media professionals can carry out their work without intimidation, harassment, or arbitrary detention.
We stand in solidarity with Suweys Gacayte, her family, and the wider journalism community, and we reaffirm our commitment to defending press freedom and the rights of women journalists in Somalia.
