MTN ‘hacked’ as users grab up to 1TB of free data before glitch is fixed

MTN South Sudan has reportedly fixed a system glitch that allowed subscribers to repeatedly activate 25GB of internet data for free.

The loophole spread quickly on social media, with users repeatedly dialling a USSD code to receive additional bundles. Some claimed they accumulated up to one terabyte of data.

Several hours later, the code stopped working. Users also reported that MTN removed the free data from their accounts.

MTN South Sudan has not issued a public statement explaining what caused the reported glitch or confirming how many subscribers used it.

In this earlier interview with Al Jazeera English, Kenyan President William Ruto denied allegations that Kenya was arming Sudan's Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
